Abstract

To find the space distribution and the kinematics of spiral-arm tracers in our Galaxy we have first to determine the distances, especially those of high-luminosity objects. Usually, fundamental far-reaching distance determinations are based on photometric and spectroscopic methods. The luminosity calibration cannot be separated, in general, from the more general problem of calibrating the spectral classifications in terms of luminosities, intrinsic colors, and population characteristics. Suppose a classification giving the parameters S, L, P, Q… depending on spectral type, luminosity, population type and so on, then these parameters should be related to the empirical parameters necessary for investigations of galactic structure and dynamics, namely, absolute magnitude, intrinsic color, age, abundance of metals [Fe/H], abundance of the CNO-group, and so on. These, in turn, should be related to the theoretical parameters mass, age, chemical composition, rotation… From these relationships we should be able to reach conclusions as to how mass, luminosity, and chemical composition vary with stellar age for different sub-groups of stars, that is, conclusions concerning galactic evolution.
