Photosynthesis, two centuries after its discovery by Joseph Priestley

Abstract

A great deal of new information about energy coupling in photosynthesis has become available since the last International Congress at Freudenstadt. Nevertheless the nature of the intermediate energetic state through which electron flow drives phosphorylation and the various other energy linked reactions has continued to be a matter for controversy.The course of this controversy has been recorded in a number of reviews (GOOD et al. 1966, AVRON & NEUMANN 1968, PACKER & CROFTS 1967,PACKER et al. 1970, WALKER & CROFTS 1970, CROFTS et al. 1971, JAGENDORF & URIBE 1967) and we cannot attempt in this paper to cover the many excellent contributions to the field in recent years. Instead we shall discuss work from our own and other laboratories which have contributed to the chemiosmotic interpretation of photosynthetic energy coupling.
