Abstract

We have appealed to highly diverse branches of geophysics. We might have gone further. For example, meteorites may teach something about terrestrial chemistry; or again the mantle temperature depends on the way heat escapes from the core, and the theory of the terrestrial dynamo might be able to furnish information in this regard. But the benefits are lost in the growth of the margin of uncertainty. It is time to conclude by returning gradually to the observable phenomena and by describing some features which have hitherto not found a place. We shall dispense with repetition of the arguments already given in the preceding chapters in support of each assertion.
