Abstract

The temperature of the Earth’s surface and its variations with time depend on solar heating. However below some tens of meters of depth all these variations have disappeared except for effects of very long period, such as the after effects of the Quaternary glaciations. The temperature, constant in time, increases with depth. The temperature gradient between two points is obtained by dividing their difference in temperature in °C. by their difference in depth. It is of the order of some tens of degrees per kilometer, greatly variable with locality and depth.
