Abstract

The following considerations are a first attempt at formulating [internal] laws for the historical evolution of physics — a task as yet unsolved by historiography [of science]. The practical value of this attempt resides in the fact that [the knowledge of] such evolutionary laws provides a scientific basis for prognostics and research strategy that cannot be obtained in any other way.

Translated from ‘Entwicklungsgesetze und Perspektiven der Physik’, Monatsberichte der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin 9 (1967) 538; paper read at the Symposion ‘Dialectics and Modern Natural Science’, held in Moscow from 26th to 29th October, 1966.
