Abstract

It is a pleasure to be at this ESLAB Symposium on Infrared Space Techniques. Over the past seven years very rapid advances have been made in the techniques of observing celestial objects in the infrared. These include the techniques that have permitted observations from mountaintop observatories in the 10 and 20 μ atmospheric windows and recent techniques for observing within the stratosphere by balloons and airplanes. A number of interesting surprises have been encountered and issues raised by these observations. I have chosen four topics to discuss at this time: (1) infrared stars, (2) diffuse infrared galactic objects, (3) infrared galaxies, and (4) cosmic radiation. In each of these topics the observed results have not been anticipated. In each of them observations above the atmosphere play a major role.
