Abstract

The preceding chapter developed the theme of “being” or “actualized essence” as the doctrine central to the metaphysics operative in Aquinas’ Commentary on the Metaphysics. That key doctrine, and the metaphysical system built around it, were exposed by Aquinas in such a way that I feel justified in concluding that they represent Aristotle’s thought as Aquinas understood that thought. However, whether or not this historical conclusion be true, independent of its truth or falsity, I believe it proper to see the metaphysics operative in the Commentary as most probably Aquinas’ own system. And so, if I am correct on both points, it appears that the Commentary presents simultaneously Aquinas’ understanding of Aristotle’s system, and Aquinas’ own personal philosophy of being, for these two metaphysics are identical.
