Abstract

The picture of Europe in the year 2000 will essentially be shaped by her economic development. It is not by chance, that European unification has so far been realized primarily in the realm of economic cooperation: in a sense, securing the material basis together with economic progress seems to be a necessary, albeit not sufficient precondition to solve most other problems of the social system in Europe.
