Abstract
We saw earlier that in order to make use of Descartes’s proof of the immortality of the soul by way of the radical distinction of soul from body it is not necessary to accept Descartes’s theories in their entirety. Now the proof of the immortality of the soul in Nicole’s treatise forms part of proofs of the existence of God. Since these proofs refer to the principles of Cartesian physics it is important to determine the extent of Nicole’s adherence to these principles.
