Abstract
Forty lizards and three amphisbaenians are presently known from Surinam. In the present paper eight species are reported from Surinam for the first time, whereas two new subspecies are described. The occurrence of three completely (Gymnophthalmus underwoodi Grant, Kentropyx borckianus W. Peters and Leposoma percarinatum (L. Müller)) and one partially (Cnemidophorus l. lemniscatus (Linnaeus)) unisexual species is signalized. The confusion around Kentropyx intermedius (Gray) is settled, because the types of this species could be located. They proved to belong to Kentropyx calcaratus Spix, which makes intermedius Gray a junior synonym of that species. The next name available for the species hitherto known as K. intermedius (Gray) is borckianus W. Peters, and consequently the species has to be renamed K. borckianus W. Peters. The name of Alopoglossus carinicaudatus (Cope) is changed into A. angulatus (Linnaeus). As the holotype of A. angulatus (Linnaeus) is apparently lost, a neotype is designated. It is shown that the reported occurrence of Tupinambis teguixin (Linnaeus) for northern South America is based on a mistake made by Duméril & Bibron (1839).
