Abstract

This series of four lectures was delivered at the NATO Summer School in Mathematical Physics in Istanbul, August, 1970. They did not pretend to cover all the material in this vast domain of modern (or what people usually call rigorous) statistical mechanics. Rather, our aim was to give to non-specialist s (by a non-specialist!) a rapid survey as a first contact with this rapidly developing field. We have divided our lectures as follows:

  • First Lecture. Introduction—Mathematical and physical.

  • Second Lecture. Thermodynamic limit.

  • Third Lecture. Low-density expansions, phase transitions.

  • Fourth Lecture. Invariance of physical states.

† presented at the NATO Summer School in Mathematical Physics, Istanbul, 1970.
