Abstract
These lectures are intended mainly for relativists with a geometrical background. I hope they will provide access to the astrophysical literature on cosmology. Five main references are used: Ehlers’ (1973) lectures on general relativity; Ellis’ (1971) lectures on theoretical cosmology; the books by Peebles (1971) and Weinberg (1972) for astrophysical cosmology; and Longair’s (1971) article on observational cosmology. Together with the forthcoming volume 2 of Novikov and Zeldovich (1973?), these cover almost all the points which a nonspecialist needs. An attempt has here been made to keep the topics covered and further references to a minimum. Unless explicitly indicated otherwise I will use Ehlers’ (1973) conventions, including the units 8πG = c = = h = k=l. A subscript ‘o’ always denotes ‘here and now’ and/or ‘observed’; ‘e’ means ‘emitted’ and/or ‘earlier’.
Rough but convenient conversion factors are: λ = 1 cm →hv = 10-4 eV and kT= 10-4 eV →T= 1K.
