Abstract
Braithwaite’s paper, which was delivered with great charm and vigor at the conference, has two notable objectives. The primary objective, in the words of the final sentence, is to contribute “toward furthering the pragmatists’ and verificationists’ program of taking how a man acts as the criterion for what he believes.” (p. 55) The second objective, which emerges almost as a by-product of the analysis, is to point out “one of the essential features which distinguish a person from an automaton” (p. 45) I will comment briefly on both objectives.
