Abstract
A vast amount of experimental data has been collected about the alkali metals in the upper atmosphere since the first observation of a yellow radiation in the nightglow was reported by Slipher in 1929, a radiation which turned out to originate from Na and to be located within the atmosphere of the earth. Summaries of the early history of Na are given by Kvifte (1953) and Chamberlain (1961). Lithium was reported observed in twilight almost simultaneously by Delannoy and Weill (1958), and Gadsden and Salmon (1958). Sullivan and Hunten (1964) were the first to furnish proof of the existence of K in the earth’s upper atmosphere.
