Conflicts in Temple-Work:

The Breakdown of the Puritan Brotherhood

Abstract

The Civil War in England lasted until the middle of 1646. The initial victories of the royal forces in 1643 were reversed with the coming of the Scottish army later in the year and the reorganization of the parliamentary forces into the New Model Army early in 1645. After the battle of Naseby on June 14,1645, in which the King’s entire army was overwhelmed by the New Model, Charles I was in no position to continue the war. With the fall of Bristol in September, the last hope in England for the King was gone. In April 1646, Charles I fled to the Scots. In June the City of Oxford, the last royalist base, capitulated. For all purposes, the Civil War was over, and the King was in virtual captivity.
