Abstract

In contrast to the irreversible decline of the republican magistracy and the emasculated popular assemblies, the Senate, as the successor to much of the elective and legislative functions formerly exercised by the comitia, gained in jurisdictional assignments. Moreover, it also acquired new assignments in its own right.
