The Post-Yield Behaviour of Amorphous Plastics

  • Chapter
The Physics of Glassy Polymers

Part of the book series: Materials Science Series ((MASCSE))

Abstract

In the previous chapter the yielding of glassy thermoplastics was described and the different yield criteria assessed. In this chapter we will be concerned with what happens next. It is clear that in some cases, and especially in tension, fracture intervenes, although, on the other hand, even under temperature well below the glass transition temperature. It is, of course, also well known that brittleness and extensibility depend on the molecular weight of the polymer which needs to be above a certain level, characteristic of the particular polymer, for adequate mechanical properties to be attained. Naturally, the polymer glasses used commercially exceed this molecular weight, and when this criterion is met it seems that virtually all organic glasses are capable of showing yield phenomena under a suitable stress field.
