Abstract

The main function of the alimentary tract is the transfer of food materials from the outside world to the blood. In the process, three separate stages are involved:

  1. 1.

The food must be moved along the gut.

  2. 2.

The food must be broken down into small molecules (digested).

  3. 3.

The food must be transferred across the gut wall into the body (absorbed).
