Abstract

In the early years of European settlement of Tasmania, the white man was in continuous battle with the environment. Houses had to be built, stock tended, roads and bridges constructed, and the colony administered. These paramount activities left little time for anthropological observa-tions. Unfortunately, as a result, little of the habits and customs of the aborigines were observed, or if they were, little positive recording occurred. In retrospect, it is obvious that no complete story of the Tasmanians exists; what remains comprises accounts, some quite conflicting, of observations made by a number of individuals. It is clear when comparing these accounts that there are often several interpretations of any one facet of life, and the correct interpretation may well be difficult to discern.
