Abstract
The climate of the region including the Zambezi River catchment above Kariba depends entirely on the relative position of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone. The latter is rather complicated in structure as it provides the meeting ground for three distinct air currents:
-
(i)
The Southeast Trade Winds (Indian Ocean) which normally cover the southern part of Rhodesia,
-
(ii)
The Northeast Monsoon (East African coast), and
-
(iii)
‘Congo Air’, a monsoonal indraught across the west coast of Africa approaching the region from the north-west.
