Abstract
On the basis of its thermal properties, Lake Kariba has been defined as a warm monomictic reservoir (Coche, 1968; Begg, 1970). Its thermal cycle is characteristically composed of a period of total circulation followed by a period of partial circulation. During the latter, the water mass is typically stratified into three layers: a surface — or mixed layer (epilimnion), a bottom — or stagnant layer (hypolimnion), and an intermediate region (metalimnion) which includes the plane of maximum rate of decrease in temperature known as thermocline (Hutchinson, 1957).
