Abstract
The loudness level of sinusoidal frequency-modulated tones (1500 Hz ± 700 Hz) was measured as a function of their frequency of modulation and sound pressure level. The purpose was to find out how loudness depends on the time structure of the spectrum while the level is kept constant. The results indicate that loudness remains constant up to frequencies of modulation of 16 Hz, then rises and reaches a new constant value between 64 Hz and 128 Hz. This partly unexpected effect is compared with values calculated on the basis of incompletely known excitation patterns for such frequency-modulated tones. The first direct estimations of such excitation patterns are given.
