Abstract

Solar particle fluxes were measured with balloon-borne instrumentation at Kiruna (Sweden) during the solar particle events of August 1972. Data from these balloon flights and from the satellite Explorer 41 were used to investigate the temporal variations of the energy spectrum during the event following the flare at 0620 UT on August 4, 1972. It was found that the slope of the energy spectrum increased linearly in the latter part of the event. Extrapolation of these linear variations to the time of the flare yielded power-law differential energy spectra with an exponent 1.8 ≤ γ ≤ 2.3 or exponential rigidity spectra with a characteristic rigidity 85 MV ≤ P 0 ≤ 110 MV. These values are in agreement with the corresponding parameters of time-integrated fluxes from Explorer 41. Implications of these results on the source energy spectrum of the solar particles and their propagation in interplanetary space are discussed.
