Abstract

I would like to talk about two questions which are of importance in connection with the use of supernovae as distance indicators. First — what is the dispersion among the absolute magnitudes of type I supernovae at maximum light, and second — what is the mean magnitude difference between type I and type II? Both of these problems were studied by Kowal in 1968; he found a dispersion of 0 m. 6 for type I (and for type II) and a mean magnitude difference of 2 m. 1, type II being fainter than type I.
