Abstract
During the past decade substantial progress has been made with the difficult problem of interpreting the spectra of supernovae. The basic character of the spectrum is now apparent and there seems to be general agreement that some few spectral features have been successfully identified in the spectra of supernovae of type I as well as in those of type II. This recent progress stands in striking contrast to the relative stagnation that the subject experienced in the quarter of a century that followed the first detailed description of the spectrum of a supernova by Minkowski (1939). It results in part from the development of new methods of observation and in part from the abandonment of earlier preconceptions regarding the character of supernovae spectia.
