Abstract

Absorption lines in the visible wavelength range, due to the interstellar gas, have been known since 1904 when Hartmann noticed that the Call K-line in the spectrum of the binary star δ Orionis did not share in the Doppler shift due to the binary motion observed in the other spectral lines. In spite of a number of following observations of such “stationary lines” in the spectra of other stars, however, it was not until about the 1930’s that the concept of a general interstellar gas gained acceptance.
