Abstract

Studying the distribution of interstellar matter in our galaxy is a difficult task; the main difficulty arises from the absence of distance criteria for interstellar matter independent of kinematics, except when there is an obvious association of gas with stars for which a photometric distance can be obtained. Though the main motion in the galaxy is rotation, there are also random motions and systematic small- or large-scale non-circular motions: the differential rotation theory is thus only a first-order approximation, which can be used to obtain a gross overall picture of the spiral structure, but it gives relatively poor results for the solar vicinity, where fortunately optical observations are of great help. Attempts have been made for trying to detect non-circular motions to compare them with the predictions of the gravity-wave theory of spiral structure, and to have a better idea of the actual distribution of interstellar matter. This is certainly one of the most promising directions for the future, but much remains to be done in this field.
