Abstract
Evidence is provided which establishes the correctness of the finding that, when malate was synthesized by darkened acidifying CAM leaves in the presence of 14CO2, the distribution of label between carbon atoms 4 and 1 of the malate approximated to a ratio of 2 : 1. This result was not an artefact of the degradation procedure as suggested by Sutton & Osmond (dy1972). As the explanation, that this distribution of label resulted from a double carboxylation process, has not found support from recent work in other laboratories, it would seem advisable to seek an alternative hypothesis.
