Abstract

The soil biological characteristics were studied of a number of plant communities in the region of alpine meadows in the Tomanova dolina valley (West Tatra Mts.) Czechoslovakia, in 1969–1971. The main aim was to study the relationships and correlations among the plant associations, soil types, the composition of soil arthropod fauna and the main physiological groups of soil microflora. Also the dependence of biotic components on different abiotic factors was considered. The dynamics of soil arthropod fauna and soil microflora counts and activities were investigated. This contribution, although containing only some of the results, clearly demonstrates the qualitative as well as quantitative diversity of the alpine biotopes.
