Abstract

A high degree of operational flexibility and the possibility for experiment control by a real-time ground computer system make operation of the GEOS payload a delicate task which had to be defined well in advance of the spacecraft launch. It has been agreed to adopt three different modes of commanding:

  1. (i)

    scheduled commands to all experiments

  2. (ii)

commands to an individual experiment based on the data received from this experiment, and

  3. (iii)

commands to an individual experiment, but based on the data received from other experiments.

Typical examples of all three modes are presented. The agreed shift plan for GEOS is presented and justified, and the orientation of the spacecraft in orbit is discussed with particular reference to directional observations of particles and waves.
