Abstract

Ion-composition and plasma analysers on the GEOS satellite may be used to detect and analyse Ba+ ions injected by shaped-charge releases at the foot of the L = 6.6 field line. Interactions between the Ba+ jet and the ambient plasma medium may give rise to ULF or VLF wave amplification, modifications of the Ba+ velocity distribution or that of the ambient plasma. This paper examines the experimental problems associated with detecting the jet in the equatorial plane and discusses the use of several GEOS experiments to monitor the local wave-particle environment which, as some authors have suggested, may be modified by the Ba+ plasma.
