Abstract

Although the reaction: alkene + hydrogen → alkane is thermodynamically allowed, hydrogen is a rather stable molecule not easily susceptible to polarisation, and in consequence reaction with an alkene is not observed in absence of a catalyst. Concerted addition is also symmetry disallowed.
