Necessity, Quotation, and Truth: An Indexical Theory

  • Chapter
Language in Focus: Foundations, Methods and Systems

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 43))

Abstract

I, here, and now are indexical expressions. They and others like them have come to be much better understood as a result of recent model- theoretic analyses.1 Somewhat unexpectedly, this theoretical work directs our attention to a distinction between “semantic” and “pragmatic” synonymy.

I have received helpful comments on drafts and presentations of this paper, especially from Anil Gupta, Asa Kasher, and Bas van Frassen. The paper was prompted by a question about Wittgenstein’s “‘p’ says that p” that was proposed to me by Hidé Ishiguro. This research was supported under NSF Grant GS-40698.
