Abstract
Fifteen years after the seventh conference, the eighth Solvay Conference on Physics took place in Brussels from 27 September to 2 October 1948. The general theme of the Conference was ‘The Elementary Particles’. Numerous techniques, which had been developed and promoted during the War, had become important for the progress of elementary particle physics, e.g. the particle accelerators and microwave devices. In addition, photographic emulsion techniques had improved so much that sensible observation of tracks of charged particles could be made and information about important properties of photographed objects could be obtained. It was at this crucial moment in the development of elementary particle physics, three years after World War II had come to an end, that a new Solvay Conference was held.
