Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 8))

Abstract

Internal and external heavy atom effects on photophysical processes have been extensively investigated and reviewed [1]. However, relatively few studies have been reported on the effect of external enhancement of spinorbit coupling on photochemical reactions [2]. Among the first reactions described in this category we should mention the photodimerization of acenaphthylene [2b] and the direct photoisomerization of trans-stilbene [2c]. In this lecture we would like to present several recent findings about very large effects of external spinorbit coupling enhancement observed in photoisomerizations of bianthrone-like molecules (Ia, X = CO, Ib, X = CH2, and Ic, X = N—CH3).
