The Galaxy and Interstellar Medium

  • Conference paper
Origin of Cosmic Rays

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((ASIC,volume 14))

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the galactic setting for the propagation and possible origin of cosmic rays. A description of the overall structure and constituents of our Galaxy is followed by an account of the physical properties and distribution of the interstellar medium. An attempt is made to solve the problem of covering such a broad subject in a brief review by concentrating on those features which are judged to have a direct bearing on the origin and propagation of cosmic rays. Even so it is not feasible to support the text fully with references. A suggested reading list is therefore given at the end.
