Abstract

For the last 15 years attempts have been made to observe celestial gamma rays but it has been possible only very recently to construct instruments that are sufficiently sensitive for the measurement of these very weak fluxes. The very large scientific interest for these observations comes from the fact that, although gamma rays originate also from interactions of electrons with particles and fields, they are both created in nuclear interactions via the decay of unstable particles and in nuclear de-excitation as line radiation. They may thus indicate places of nucleogenesis, and of intense nuclear interaction or annihilation now and in the past. Gamma rays have a very low absorption cross-section (Stecker, 1971), and may thus be detected over very large distances or at very large red-shifts.

In this paper, results presented previously (Pinkau 1973, 1974) have partly been used.
