Abstract

Io is the innermost of the four Galilean satellites of Jupiter. In size, density, and distance from its parent planet it is quite similar to our own Moon. Most of its other physical properties are different from our lunar experience. To gain some familiarization with this satellite, the following brief discussion will highlight some of its observed physical properties. An excellent review has recently been published by Morrison and Cruikshank (1974).
