Abstract

Selected topics in Jovian research are reviewed with an emphasis on recent results from Pioneer 10. The Pioneer 10 results for the temperature field in the lower atmosphere are not consistent with other observational constraints and must be rejected. The results for the ionosphere suggest that the thermosphere may be surprisingly hot, ∼ 103 K. It is suggested that this high temperature may be maintained by upward propagation of inertia-gravity waves.
