Outer Solar-System Aeronomy
With the close encounter to Jupiter by Pioneer 10, the exploration of the outer planets has begun. Generally, the outer planets with their strong gravitational fields have retained their original composition and their present atmospheric composition should be indicative of solar abundances. In many respects, their reducing atmospheres are similar to our present speculations on the nature of the Earth’s primitive atmosphere. Exploration of the outer solar-system is essential if we are to understand the formation and evolution of our own atmosphere.
