Abstract
Miller resigned his teaching position at General Theological Seminary in 1924, and the following article from The New Republic of that year indicates the event that occasioned his decision and the reasons behind it. The event was a pastoral letter from the Bishops of the Episcopal Church making a clergyman liable for trial for interpreting the words in the creed about Jesus’ birth in any other than a literal sense.
