Abstract
An understanding of the Soviet critique of what they call ‘neopositivism’ and the relevant philosophic issues, requires a knowledge of the historical background. It will be the task of this chapter and the succeeding one to outline the two historical series:
-
(1)
The history of positivism in Western Europe up to its most recent form as ‘logical positivism’ or ‘neopositivism’.
-
(2)
The history in Marxism-Leninism — from the ‘classics’ to late Stalinism — of the concept of philosophy and of the reaction to positivism.
