Parliamentarian and Whig Historians from the Restoration to 1702

  • Chapter
Restoration Historians and the English Civil War

Abstract

Edmund Ludlow and Mrs. Lucy Hutchinson differ from all the other Parliamentarian historians of the Civil War who are known to have written in the period from the Restoration to 1702 through the fierceness of their advocacy of the Parliamentarian cause or, more particularly, of the republicanism to which their Parliamentarianism led them. We have seen that in the same period Rushworth expresses his Parliamentarian views only weakly, Whitelocke is close to being a repentant Parliamentarian, and Baxter condemns much of the outcome of the Parliamentarian cause.
