Abstract

In North Tuscany the remains of the Hercynian mountain chain are covered in places (Massa metamorphic Unit) by fluvio-lacustrine deposits with layers of coal of the Stephanian and Autunian Ages, as determined from the rich fossil flora. These florasuggest a hot-humid intertropical-type climate. The sedimentological features furthermore point to a remarkable instability of the Hercynian relief in wich were found the Permo-Carboniferous sinking basins. During the Lower Permian this instability increased further, thus causing a corresponding increase in the erosion on the reliefs and in the amount of clastic material deposited in the sinking basins between the mountains. In the upper part of the Autunian the lacustrine basin of San Lorenzo in the Pisan Mountains is completely filled in. At this point (Saalian movements) the relief undergoes a sharp rejuvenation: the deposit of coarser detritic material (Asciano Formation) is a result of the morphological variations following on the increase in the vertical movements. However the climate by now has changed to a drier sub-arid type. On the Pisan Mountains this variation can be seen in the sedimentological features of the red fanglomeratic deposits of Asciano Formation. The Post-Hercynian sedimentation on the Pisan Mountains ends with the Asciano Formation: in this area there are none of the fine-grained deposits which, in other areas, cover the arid lowlands at the end of the Permian.
