Summary
The beetles of the shores of the Baltic Sea demonstrate a remarkable combination of elements of marine and limnic origin. Compared with other soil types, the sandy shores are inhabited by the richest fauna. Many species have the eastern limit of their distribution area there. From west to east a decrease of species number was noted. Several species change their habitats at the limits of their areas. The sandy shores are relictary areas and may offer conditions for the evolution of endemic variations. A ‘baltic’ distribution type is proposed.
