Summary

The composition and distribution of the Chironomid populations of the river Schill and its tributaries are described in regard to variation of natural factors and to the intensity of water pollution. 137 taxa were found; 12 of them are recorded first for the fauna of Rumania. The population dynamics of the Chironomids is clearly influenced by the considerable pollution of various kind, caused by urban and industrial sewage. In some parts of the watercourse the bottom fauna is eradicated which meant heavy decrease of the importance of the fish production in this river.
