Abstract

Since the first description of seven patients from two families with juvenile hereditary macular degeneration by Stargardt in 1909, many cases with this disease, have been reported by subsequent workers. And the disease described in Stargardt’s original publication has been termed Stargardt’s prototype for a specific disease or Stargardt’s juvenile macular degeneration. However, several conditions were included in the Stargardt’s disease category in the past literature, and this confusion is well illustrated by Stargardt himself in a subsequent publication (Stargardt, 1913).
