Abstract

Synthetic analogues of two magnetic mineral systems have been prepared: (i) a titanomagnetite system Fe2.4-δAlδTi0.6O4 (0<δ<0.45). (ii) a titanomaghemite system prepared by oxidation of Fe2.4-δMgδTi0.6O4(0<δ<0.35). The following properties were determined: unit cell edge, Curie temperature, thermomagnetic behaviour, saturation magnetization, isothermal remanence and coercive force. The introduction of Al, Mg and vacancies into titanomagnetites reduces saturation magnetization and coercive force. Curie temperature is lowered by the presence of Al and Mg ions but rises with increasing concentration of vacancies.
