Abstract

The response of 5-halogen substituted analogs of the nucleic acid base uracil to excitation by UV-light or ionizing radiation is a topic of interest in radiation biology since nearly two decades. These components and their nucleoside(-tide) derivatives, (I), can be incorporated into DNA of actively proliferating cells in place of the corresponding thymine residues. Irradiation of cells containing the halogenated analogs produces an up to four-fold increase in lethal, biological damage.
