Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 10))

Abstract

A precise knowledge of interactions in nucleic acid protein complexes requires a good understanding of excited-state properties and energy transfer processes in these systems. Weak interactions between identical or different organic species may be greatly enhanced by freezing aqueous solutions. Rapid cooling of an aqueous solution induces the formation of a microcrystalline ice structure. Solute molecules are excluded from the growing ice crystals and accumulate in the interstices of solvent (ice) crystallites where they form aggregates. Aggregate formation is responsible for many different phenomena involving constituents of proteins and nucleic acids.
